This week we began to learn the Alphabet. We are using a special system called "Handwriting Without Tears," where we learn letters based on its writing complexity, ie: straight lines to curved.
On Tuesday, during our morning circle we passed around our surprise box, while shaking and guessing what's inside. Inside we found "Leo the line," a cut up sour smelling lemon, lotion and lolly pops that went home with the homework. We experienced our letter while using our senses: smelling, touching, and tasting.
When practicing writing, we form letters from top to bottom while concentrating on fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination. A pencil has to be held using our three fingers: thumb, middle and pointer. We can encourage our little learners at home by practicing holding utensils appropriately (using the same three fingers), peeling a banana -just those fingers, and of course coloring and writing.
On Wednesday, our brave "show and tellers" shared with the class the items that they themselves brought from home that began with our letter of the week; thank you to our amazing parents for sending it in. It encourages language skills, public speaking, confidence, pride and self esteem. Everyone participating did a fabulous job!!!
We have also grasped the concept of a number zero. We emptied a cookie jar, counted out the number of the children in the class, put back 11 smart cookies, and passed the jar in a circle where everyone took one, once again emptying the jar to a zero.
Our homework is a fun way to strengthen the knowledge of the concepts we learn in class. Monday's homework is due on Tuesday, Wednesday is a show and tell day for the letter of the week, and finally Thursday's homework is due the following Monday.
Our first week has been a great success.
Wishing everyone a healthy and happy new year,
Morah Rebecca :)
